LOCATION: OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES

Care for cancer patients in the Gaza Strip is limited, and children with cancer often miss out on their educational development. This project addressed this gap by increasing access to education for the young patients, working with and improving five local centres that provide education, medical and psychosocial support; 20 teachers were trained, five psychological counselors were appointed, assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs) were provide to facilitate access to education, and 11 schools were adapted to cater for the needs of cancer patients. Community awareness was also improved though 15 workshops, and a computerised system was developed to coordinate the needs of cancer patients. 293 children benefited directly from this education program.

KAYAN

Kayan was found to have cancer in his left eye when he was only 6 months old. His eye was removed and replaced with a glass eye, but the ordeal affected him negatively in various aspects, including his academic progress.

An appropriate intervention plan was developed for his case: he was aided with educational techniques to help him overcome his trauma, together with counselling sessions. His teachers reported improvement after the intervention, noticing an increase in his participation in the classroom and increased academic results, as well as a noticeable difference in his confidence.

Kayan says, “I started to love coming to school and was no longer bothered about what other children said about my eye… Hopefully I will learn and excel in my studies. When I grow up, I will achieve my dream and become a teacher.” Kayan’s mother also remarked that her son had changed a lot, and that the intervention had a positive impact on his studies, gave him confidence around his peers, and his mental health had improved.
